Online video sharing platform YouTube has launched a new feature that will allow users to create songs with the voices of multiple singers composed with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).
The feature called "Dream Track" allows users to write down what they want in the song and choose the voice of the singer they use, and AI will help create songs up to 30 seconds long that can be used as background music in YouTube's Shorts feature.
"This experiment was designed to find out how far technology can be used to create deeper connections between artists, content creators and, ultimately, fans," said YouTube executives Lyor Cohen and Toni Reid in a statement posted on YouTube's official website, Thursday.
In the initial phase, this feature will only be available to select YouTube content creators in the United States. The experiment, they said, was a vehicle for studying the potential of AI in helping artists and content creators realize their imaginations and stimulate creativity.
“In addition, fans can also connect with the works they love in new ways, bringing them closer together through these interactive devices and experiences,” Cohen and Reid added.
There are nine singers who lent their voices to YouTube's latest project. They are Alec Benjamin, Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, John Legend, Papoose, Sia, T-Pain, and Troye Sivan. The singers involved said they were happy to participate in the project because they understood the potential of AI in spurring their creativity in singing.
“I continue to advocate for pushing the boundaries of technology and utilizing it to create the most engaging music for my fans,” said rapper T-Pain.
Apart from that, singer Charlie Puth also said that YouTube understands to work together to develop this technology responsibly to encourage creativity and not replace it.
Understanding complaints from several parties that AI has the potential to threaten the creativity of artistic workers, YouTube is committed to taking steps to use AI in a responsible and collaborative manner. The company has also released an AI music development platform and an AI incubator.
“We also continue to explore the possibilities of how AI can empower the collective creativity of our singers, songwriters, producers and colleagues while identifying the challenges,” the statement said.
