Technology-based accommodation company Bobobox officially introduced an innovation called Carbon Offset Toggle to address carbon emission reduction in Indonesia by collaborating with Fairatmos.
"In carrying out this sustainable environmental initiative, Bobobox is collaborating with Fairatmos as a partner because of its expertise in carrying out the emission calculation process according to globally applicable standards, being transparent and accountable," said Bobobox Co-Founder and President Antonius Bong at a press conference in Jakarta.
Antonius explained that through the features in this innovation, Bobobox users can participate in various carbon reduction movements when staying at Bobopod and Bobocabin accommodation products, one of which is by supporting the Katingan Mentaya Project in Central Kalimantan, and the SPE-GRK carbon offset for Pertamina's Lahendong Project. NRE in North Sulawesi.
The aim is to invite the public, especially accommodation users, to realize the importance of building a sustainable environment, one of which is by balancing the carbon footprint or often called zero carbon.
Furthermore, he explained, the initiative from Bobobox was also in support of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy's (Kemenparekraf) target to reduce carbon emissions by up to 50 percent in the Indonesian tourism industry by 2030, and achieve an emission-free tourism industry by 2045.
"I hope that this initiative can inspire other businesses in the Indonesian tourism industry to take small, meaningful steps for the environment while on holiday, as well as encourage consumers to take simple steps, but have a significant impact on the environment," he said.
A number of other efforts that Bobobox has made since it was founded six years ago, namely creating sustainable social and environmental initiatives to create accommodation services that are able to have a positive social and environmental impact.
Then empowering local communities called Local Bob, special recruitment initiatives for local talent through Bob Academy, efforts towards deaf-friendly and inclusive accommodation through the Good Sleep For All program, and many more and focusing on environmental initiatives with the system used adopting a construction structure prefabricated and modular, as well as the cut and fill method in the land processing process around the accommodation area.
On that occasion, Fairatmos CEO Natalia Rialucky Marsudi said that her party carried out emission calculations through various aspects to ensure proper accuracy, namely calculating carbon emissions based on aspects such as room type, duration of stay and accommodation location.
Because modern human activities can increase carbon emissions when using accommodation, such as electricity and internet use, which contribute a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions. Apart from that, Fairatmos and Bobobox also focus on two aspects in selecting projects in Indonesia, namely carbon absorption and long-term durability.
“Steps taken include measuring emissions in each cabin and pods, followed by offering carbon offsets. "The funds raised will be allocated to carbon credit programs aimed at reducing emissions, with documentation and certification linked to systems such as SRN and other international platforms," he said.
