The YouTube platform is trialling a new chatbot powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) so that it can communicate with users and allow them to dive deeper into the content they watch.
Variety, Monday (6/11) local time, reported that a new conversation tool called YouChat on YouTube will provide answers to questions about the videos users are watching, recommendations for related content, and more without interrupting playback.
“The ‘YouChat’ feature is available starting Monday for a small number of people and on some videos. "In the next few weeks, these videos will roll out to YouTube Premium users in the United States on Android devices," wrote an announcement from YouTube.
Users who have access to the experimental chatbot feature can access the tool by tapping the new “Ask” button below a selected YouTube video, then asking a question about the video or selecting a suggested command.
A YouTube spokesperson said the chat tool does not use Google's Bard chatbot. Instead, these features are generated from YouTube information and website pages.
"(This feature) is generated by a large language model that leverages information from the YouTube platform and the web," a YouTube spokesperson said.
Additionally, YouTube is also rolling out another experimental generative AI feature that summarizes topics in large comments sections to give users an easier way to view and follow conversations taking place in videos.
“We hope this feature can help them (content creators) know at a glance what their viewers are talking about,” YouTube said.
The test was run on a small number of videos in English that had large comments sections. To access it, YouTube Premium users can participate in trying this feature on the official YouTube page.
Over the coming weeks and months, YouTube will learn more about how users can use the new features and the platform will continue to introduce more updates.
These features are in addition to a series of other AI-based tools that YouTube recently announced in September at its “It’s Made on YouTube” event.
These features include YouTube Create (a new app with features to automate editing, effects, filters, and transitions), Dream Screen (creates AI-generated video backgrounds and images to set new dynamic scenes for YouTube Shorts), and Aloud (a dubbing tool AI-powered voice).
